Bitcoin price surpasses $5,000 for first time — RT Business

  • The price of Bitcoin surpassed $5,000 for the first time, reaching a historic new high for the cryptocurrency, before quickly dipping back below the record-breaking mark.
  • The cryptocurrency reportedly reached its highest market price of $5,149 thanks to Chinese bitcoin exchange OkCoin.
  • The new record comes amid news that six big banks have joined a project developing a new settlement currency based on blockchain technology – the world’s leading software technology used by bitcoin, ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies.
  • Originally started by UBS, the new currency could pioneer how central banks chose issue cryptocurrencies.

  • For example, with bitcoin, every transaction is viewable on a public ledger called the blockchain.
  • But since people are doing some pretty illegal things with bitcoin, such as buying and selling drugs or stolen credit card information, law enforcement has no choice but to deal with the technology on its own terms in order to prosecute wrongdoers.
  • As bitcoin continues to miraculously hold itself together amid infighting and volatile economics, some governments have introduced regulations for the virtual currency, while other legislators have advocated for a more hands-off approach while the technology matures.
  • For the record, Haun said, plenty of feds own bitcoin.
  • “I don’t think the reason the government didn’t shut down bitcoin [in the early days] was because the blockchain is useful to the government,” Haun said. “

It’s not going anywhere.
