  • During Citigroup’s earnings call Thursday, Chief Financial Officer John Gerspach said, “We think the area of cryptocurrency and digital currency is an area worthy of exploration.”
  • Gerspach said Citi’s labs in Tel Aviv and Dublin are looking at digital currencies, cryptocurrencies and blockchain.
  • Another digital currency, ethereum, traded mildly higher near $307.
  • Many digital currency enthusiasts see ethereum as the foundation for the next generation of the internet.
  • The bank then became a founding member of the Enterprise Ethereum Alliance in February, and partnered with the developers of privacy-focused digital currency Zcash in May.

Jamie Dimon says he’s not going to talk about bitcoin anymore

  • Jamie Dimon, chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, said he is no longer going to discuss bitcoin after his comments last month that the digital currency was a “fraud” caused quite the stir on Wall Street and Silicon Valley.
  • But I’m not going to talk about bitcoin anymore,” said Dimon in response to a question during the bank’s third-quarter earnings call with media on Thursday.
  • JPMorgan CFO Marianne Lake then took over the conversation.
  • “We are open-minded for digital currencies that are properly controlled and regulated,” she said, also discussing the potential merits of blockchain, the technology behind bitcoin.

Bitcoin price surpasses $5,000 for first time — RT Business

  • The price of Bitcoin surpassed $5,000 for the first time, reaching a historic new high for the cryptocurrency, before quickly dipping back below the record-breaking mark.
  • The cryptocurrency reportedly reached its highest market price of $5,149 thanks to Chinese bitcoin exchange OkCoin.
  • The new record comes amid news that six big banks have joined a project developing a new settlement currency based on blockchain technology – the world’s leading software technology used by bitcoin, ethereum, and other cryptocurrencies.
  • Originally started by UBS, the new currency could pioneer how central banks chose issue cryptocurrencies.
  • “We see it as a stepping stone to a future where central banks issue their own [cryptocurrency] at some point,” UBS director Hyder Jaffrey told CoinDesk.

  • Since bottoming at $2,643 a coin the day of the split, bitcoin has exploded by 57%, and it is now up 335% in 2017.
  • Sheba Jafari, the head of technical strategy at Goldman Sachs, wrote in a note sent to clients on Sunday that because bitcoin was approaching her target of $3,691 (which it has since passed), an extension wave five of this move could take bitcoin all the way up $4,827 before a correction pushes it all the way down to about $2,221.
  • Jafari isn’t the only one who sees bitcoin approaching the $5,000 level.
  • Arthur Hayes, the CEO of BitMEX, a bitcoin derivative exchange, expressed that view to Business Insider after last week’s implementation of Segregated Witness, or SegWit, a software update designed to improve the coin’s scalability and make it faster to process more transactions.
  • “At this point, Bitcoin would have to move back under 2,935 (Jul. 21st high/top of wave 1/V) to signal that a top is already in place,” Jafari wrote.

The first investor in Snapchat explains why the bitcoin rally is just getting started

  • Uncertainty about governments could make cryptocurrency like bitcoin an even more in-demand commodity, said Lightspeed Venture Partners partner Jeremy Liew.
  • “Bitcoin and the other digital currencies, they all really see a lot of benefit in times of political and economic instability,” Liew said to CNBC.
  • Lightspeed co-led the first venture round in Blockchain, a bitcoin wallet, in October 2014.
  • Liew said in parts of the Middle East, Africa, South America and Eastern Europe, concerns over the government being overthrown or persistent long-term currency inflation have been driving bitcoin’s increasing valuation.
  • While there are other cryptocurrencies like ethereum, Liew points out it’s currently valued at just a fraction of bitcoin’s market cap.
