Passengers get free ride after San Francisco Muni hit by ransomeware attack #bitcoin

  • Ransomware infects a computer and encrypts all the data on its storage drives while spreading to any other vulnerable computer connected to it.
  • Every computer was left displaying a black screen with a ransom note written across it stating: “You Hacked, ALL Data Encrypted.
  • San Francisco Municipal Transport Agency attacked by hackers who locked up computers and data with 100 bitcoin demand
  • In 2013 the Cryptolocker ransomware infected an estimated 234,000 computers , including at least 50,000 in the UK, and required a global police operation to neutralise it.
  • Once the data is encrypted the user is locked out of the computer and a ransom note is displayed promising to decrypt and release the data in exchange for money.

Hackers hit San Francisco transport systems

  • On Sunday, ticketing machines were back up – but it was not clear if the hack had been contained.
  • As a precaution, staff shut off all ticketing machines on the network.
  • The BBC is not responsible for the content of external sites.
  • San Francisco news site Hoodline told the BBC the hacker had provided a list of machines he or she claimed to have infected in Muni’s network – more than 2,000 in total.
  • The hackers have made a ransom demand of 100 Bitcoin, which amounts to about $70,000 (£56,000 ; €66,000).

Hackers hit San Francisco transport systems

  • San Francisco news site Hoodline told the BBC the hacker had provided a list of machines he or she claimed to have infected in Muni’s network – more than 2,000 in total.
  • As a precaution, staff shut off all ticketing machines on the network.
  • On Sunday, ticketing machines were back up – but it was not clear if the hack had been contained.
  • “There has been no impact to the transit service, to our safety systems or to our customer’s personal information,” a spokesman told the BBC.

Number of young seeking help for anxiety rises

  • The NSPCC’s Childline counselled 11,706 young people for anxiety in 2015-16 – a 35% rise from the 8,642 in 2014-15.
  • “Often we fail to notice the impact these stories are having on young people.”
  • “The good news is that so many children are able to express their anxiety to Childline, knowing that we will take them seriously, so that we are able to reassure them.”
